Black Friday and Cyber Week in Phoenix: How to Staff Your Warehouse for the Biggest Shipping Days of the Year

For warehouses and fulfillment centers, the week after Thanksgiving isn't a holiday. It's a sprint.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions can send order volume climbing in a matter of hours. Every one of those orders has to be picked, packed, labeled and shipped on time.

The operations that handle it well usually aren't the ones that work the hardest that week. They're the ones that planned their staffing weeks before it started.

Forecast Your Peak Before You Book Labor

Start with your own data and your customers' plans.

Look at last year's order volume during the same week. Ask your clients or sales team what promotions are planned this year. Note any new customers, product lines or sales channels that could add volume.

Then translate that volume into labor: how many pickers, packers, loaders and receiving staff you'll need per shift, and for how many days.

Book Temporary Staff Early

Late November is one of the busiest times of year for staffing. Warehouses, retailers and delivery companies across the Valley are all looking for help at the same time.

If you wait until the week before, the most reliable workers may already be committed elsewhere.

Share your forecast with your staffing partner as early as possible, even if the numbers are still estimates. It's easier to adjust a plan than to build one at the last minute.

Train Before the Rush, Not During It

Peak week is the worst time to teach someone your process.

If possible, bring temporary workers in a few days early so they can learn your systems, safety rules and quality standards before volume hits.

Keep training simple and focused: how to pick accurately, how to pack and label correctly, and who to ask when something isn't clear.

Set Up Shifts That People Can Sustain

Long shifts and back-to-back days can wear down even your best people.

Consider adding an extra shift or staggering start times instead of relying only on overtime. Fresh workers make fewer mistakes, and fewer mistakes mean fewer returns later.

Protect Accuracy, Not Just Speed

During peak, it's tempting to focus only on how many orders go out the door.

But a wrong item or a late package can cost you a customer. Assign experienced team members to quality checks and problem-solving so new workers have support when issues come up.

Keep Safety in Front of Everyone

More people, more product and more equipment in the same space increases the risk of accidents.

Keep aisles clear, make sure only trained and certified operators use forklifts and other equipment, and remind everyone of basic safety rules at the start of each shift.

Plan for What Comes Next

Cyber Week is often followed by steady holiday shipping and then the returns season in late December and January.

Think about which temporary workers you may want to keep through the end of the year. Workers who already know your operation can be a big advantage when returns start coming in.
