How to Onboard Temp Workers on Day One: A Checklist for Phoenix Employers

Temporary workers can be productive from their first shift, but only if the first few hours are set up well.

When a new worker shows up and nobody knows who they report to, what they’re doing or where the restroom is, you lose time, morale and sometimes the worker. A simple day-one plan fixes most of that.

Before They Arrive

• Confirm the start time, location and which entrance to use, and share it with your staffing partner.

• Name one point of contact who will meet the workers when they arrive.

• Have any required gear ready: gloves, safety glasses, badges or anything specific to your site.

• Decide which tasks each person will start on.

The First 30 Minutes

• Meet them at the door. A real welcome sets the tone for the whole assignment.

• Walk through the basics: restrooms, break area, water, parking and where to go with questions.

• Cover site-specific safety rules, emergency exits and any areas that are off-limits.

• Introduce them to the lead or co-worker they’ll be working alongside.

Safety Comes First, Especially in Arizona

Show workers how to do the job safely before you ask them to do it fast. Demonstrate equipment, lifting expectations and any machinery they’re not cleared to use.

In Phoenix, heat is part of the job for many roles. Make sure workers know where to find water and shade and that they’re expected to take breaks when they need them.

Start With Clear, Simple Tasks

Give new workers tasks they can learn quickly, then build from there. Show the task once, watch them do it, and correct early. A few minutes of coaching in the first hour saves hours of rework later.

Check In Before the Shift Ends

Ask how the day went and what was unclear. Let them know what they did well and what to focus on tomorrow. Then share feedback with your staffing partner so the next shift goes even better.
